Medical Students should be taught soft skill: Dr Vaishali Shelgaonkar
Nagpur: In order to show appreciation to her Contribution towards the field of Medical education, Recently Dr Vaishali Shelgaonkar has been chosen by the Maharashtra Medical Council as the recipient of the first-ever MMC award for Exemplary work in Medical Education.
She completed her post-graduation from Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGMCH) in 1995. After she joined as a teacher in the anaesthesia department of her alma mater. She had a interest in the fields of critical care, obstetric critical care, laparoscopic, endoscopic, thoracoscopic and mediastinoscopic procedures in her academic sessions. During her career session she had advised to hospital to, that a surgical ICU should be started at the hospital.
After that Shelgaonkar was chosen by the Hospital authorities to hold several positions of responsiblities at the hospital, and in academic bodies.
Talking on the medical education in her recent interview to TOI she said, that medical students should be taught soft skills along with the academic medical education. She has in the past organized several basic life support training for non-medical professionals, including many for bus drivers and conductors, Reports TOI.
She further spoke talking about her desire to contribute her knowledge of medical education for the sake of the society, she mentioned "Since 2007, I have been able to train more than 100 medical officers, medical students, student nurses and staff nurses".
