Medical Negligence-cause of MBBS student Shamnas death, holds Crime branch

Kochi: The Crime Branch report regarding the death of MBBS student Shamna Thasneem has named 15 persons, including two doctors, responsible for it.The report claims it to be the result of medical negligence on the part of those attending on her.


Shamna Thasneem, a second year MBBS student of Kalamassery Government Medical College, had died last year after she was administered an injectionThe Crime Branch and apex medical board found that the student was denied proper medical attention after being admitted to the hospital, in a serious condition.


Her father after her death in un-forseen circumstances had lodged a complaint at the Kalamassery Police station .The Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police who had taken over the probe, and asked the medical board to submit a report of the death findings.


The ACP after a lapse of time informed Ms. Tasneem’s father that the probe was being wound up based on the medical officer's stand that no medical negligence had occurred. There were hardly two or three officers present from the Ernakulam District Hospital at the first meeting held and headed by District Medical Officer Kuttapan. It was at this meeting that the medical officer announced the winding up of the case investigation.


The case however, witnessed a crucial twist when after Dr Lisa John, forensic expert of Alappuzha Medical College, issued a counter statement a few days later . Her father meanwhile, met the DCP insisting on a thorough probe.He also met the Health Secretary alleging that attempts were being made topush the matter under the carpet. Following which the officer ordered the Crime Branch look into the matter.


Investigations that followed revealed to the apex board that 15 persons including doctors Jilse George and Krishna Mohan, were responsible for Shamna 's death,reported Mathrabhumi.
