Shillong:The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) has been given a major jolt by the Medical Council of India (MCI), which has decided not to recognize various Post graduate degrees given away by the institute in affiliation with the North Eastern Hill University.

The various post graduate degrees conferred by NEIGRIHMS are being put under 'not to recognize' category by the post-graduate committee of MCI.The Council has put under scanner the eligibility of professors and staff employed by the post graduate departments, and also expressed its dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Departments of Anesthesiology, General Surgery and Radio diagnosis.

The NEIGRIHMS Director, Prof. Prithwis Bhattacharya, when contacted was brusque in his reply saying that certain sections were deliberately trying to malign the institute by deliberately generating various issues to serve their own vested interests.

On the issue of non recognition he confessed to the institute of having received a notice in this regard.

"They have given us a notice over some lacunae and we have to comply with all the issues when they come for the next examination," he said . He also revealed that NEIGRIHMS has already taken the necessary steps to address all drawbacks pointed out by the Council. He spoke of the problem of faculty shortage pointed at by the body. However, he clarified that they were short of just one faculty member and the institute had already submitted evidence of all other faculty being regular employees.

To the MCI's declaration that there were no resident doctors at the institute, the NEIGRIHMS submitted the necessary proof for the same, Bhattacharya clarified.
