Medical Council Of India gets in New Nodal officer to combat ragging

Chennai: Dr Rajendra Wabale, has been appointed as the new nodal officer by the Medical Council of India to look into anti-ragging complaints of students. Students wishing to register ragging complaints with the MCI can do so on its anti-ragging helpline - 011-25361262 -- or send a fax to 011-25367324 or email to antiragging-mci@nic.in too.


A 30 % increase in anti-ragging cases has been witnessed in the last 3 years in the state of TamilNadu reports the TOI.


With ragging becoming a norm of the day a few recent incidents of ragging indicate the proportions the menace seems to be acquiring. In a recent incident in the past, seniors of KVG Medical College and KVG Dental College were found hurling death threats at their juniors leading to their arrests under the Indian Penal Code provisions.

According to another report, ragging incidents at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur led to 6 MBBS student suspensions on disciplinary grounds. These students belonged to batches of 2014 and 2015 of the college.

In yet another episode of ragging 33 second-year students of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College faced stringent action at the hands of the college authorities, and also imposed a Rs. 25,000 fine for ragging the first year batch.


The younger batch had in a November 8 written complaint to the College Principal, complained of seniors having ragged them for the past 3 months.It was initially denied by the 2nd year batch and then admitted to when video clippings of their harassing acts were shown to them. These video clips had surfaced on the social media.

It was the 1996 incident of ragging at Chidambaram Medical College in Tamil Nadu wherein a student was murdered, that led to the passing of the first anti-ragging legislation in the country.


However, a state-level committee in Tamil Nadu constituted under the Chairmanship of the Governor-Chancellor in this regard, recently, claimed that the practice of ragging had been completely eradicated.
