Medical College faculty regularized by Kerala

Kochi: The state government’s decision to regularize Government Medical College, Kalamassery faculty on the posts of assistant professors, associate professors and professors have come as a piece of good news for the college employees. The regularization order was issued last week, announcing its implementation to happen on the eve of the Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan laying the foundation stone for the Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) adjacent to the medical college campus, at 9.30am on Sunday.


A CT scanner is to be a part of the Rs. 25-crore proposed Imaging and Diagnostic Centre at the medical college. Rs 5 crore from the MLA fund of John Fernandez was consumed in the purchase of the CT scanner reported the Hindu. The state government helped in the scanner machine procurement by contributing Rs. 36 lakh.


The college was taken over by the UDF government from Cooperative Academy for Professional Excellence (CAPE) in 2013. However, the employees of the place were given a standalone status for five years.


“The regularization process for other employees are progressing fast. When the LDF government came to power, it immediately started measures to regularize the employees without waiting for five years to complete. The government is regularizing professors, associate professors and assistant professors whose verification had been completed,” said Health Minister, K K Shailaja.


According to the Minister in order to plan comprehensive development of the medical college, projects were being designed. “A total of Rs 368 crore has been allotted for constructing super specialty block, mother, and child welfare block, staff quarters, PG quarters and auditorium,” she elaborated.


Rs 25 crore and Rs 12 crore, respectively, have been sanctioned by the state government for an imaging center and cathlab.


The government has also closed the loan of Rs.58 crore taken by the college from Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank a few years ago. This has led to the creation of 162 posts including those of doctors in super speciality departments and speciality the minister added.


The main building of the cancer centre will be a six-storeyed structure with a built-up area of more than five lakh sq ft. It will house Departments like community oncology, telemedicine and yoga, integrated medicine, cancer registry, MRD and data centre, bulk drug, general store, guest room, pediatric oncology, and mortuary, The construction of the building is meant to be over in 600 days, reported TOI.
