Medical Admissions Karnataka: 8 percent fee hike not applicable on 82 institutions

Justice Kumar giving a severe word of caution to the likely erring institutions stated that all the 82 institutions declared ineligible for the 8% fee hike if found raising their fee or demanding more than what was charged last year would be penalized.


Bengaluru: 82 Karnataka institutions offering medical, Ayurveda, homeopathy, engineering and pharmacy courses, in deemed & private universities, as well as private institutions, have been declined the 8% fee hike recommended by the fee regulatory committee for the academic year 2018-19. This has been done in view of these institutions not producing their accounts when asked for the same.


Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that in the month of June, the FRC accounced that 6.8 lakh was the maximum annual fee that had been fixed for Ist year Indian students of a private medical college doing an undergraduate MBBS course in Karnataka. With this a maximum of an 8 % fee increase over that of the previous year had been allowed to the Fee Regulatory Committee. An FRC notice, asking colleges not to raise their fee beyond 8% was also sent to private medical colleges- individually.

While many medical colleges had objected to the the said hike demanding more increase, now, 82 institutions will be devoid of even this 8 % hike as they did not submit the records to the FRC when asked for. They have been now ordered to charge the same fee that they were charging last year


Former HC judge Shylendra Kumar, Chairman of the Fee Regulation Committee speaking about the fee hike denial to institutions a Deccan Herald , “We had asked all the institutions to submit their accounts. Out of 394 institutions in various streams, 82 institutions did not submit their accounts. Hence we declared them to be non-eligible for the 8% fee hike and ordered them to go ahead with the admission process with the previous year’s fee structure.”


All colleges offering Unani, naturopathy and yogic science courses in the state earlier, were declared eligible for the fee hike.


According to Justice Kumar, the 8% fee hike was recommended by the committee based on the Karnataka Private Educational Institutions Act (regulation of admission and determination of fee).
