The old adage "What's in a name" clearly does not hold true when it comes to the Post Graduate medical degrees /diploma courses awarded to degree holders in accordance to the PGMER 2000.

Its not MD (Radiology) but MD ( Radio-diagnosis). Its not MD(Paediatric Medicine) but MD(Paediatric).

With the errors coming in various applications, Medical Council of India found it necessary to take out the notice to notify all medical colleges as well as warn students against the incorrect nomenclature used by many medical colleges when coming to degrees.

This comes after the Medical Council of India came across applications during its course of processing for starting / increase of post-graduate courses in Medicine, noting that certain case applications have not been made as per the provisions of Post-graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000. The four courses/degrees where the council in particular found wrong nomenclatures being used both by students and universities were identified as :

Sr.NoApplication submitted with along with incorrect nomenclaturePrescribed nomenclature as per Postgraduate Medical Education Regulation,2000
1MD (Radiology)MD(Radio-Diagnosis)
2MD( TB & Respiratory Medicine/Pulmonary Medicine)etc.MD(Respiratory Medicine)
3MD(Dermatology/Skin &VD)etcMD(Dermatology, Venerology &

Leprosy)
4MD(Paediatric Medicine)MD(Paediatric)

To emphasize on the importance of adherence to stipulations the educational body released a circular in August to alert both students and institutions regarding this indiscreet overlooking of nomenclature rules as per Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2000. A special warning came for the students

.... in case the nomenclature is not as per the P.G.M.E.R., 2000.students who obtained such degrees would bear the brunt as their courses would be'not a recognized medical qualification under the IMC Act, 1956 and they would not be entitled for Registration....

As a severe reminder also came for institutions filing applications with wrong nomenclature. MCI circular heeded saying:
all concerned are called upon to ensure that in the applications that are made u/s 10(A) of the IMC Act, 1956 for starting / increase of capacity in a postgraduate course, the nomenclature as prescribed in P.G.M.E.R. is strictly adhered to. The Universities are particularly requested that they should while granting consent of affiliation to the applicant Medical College ensure that the nomenclature of the course is as prescribed in P.G.M.E.R. ln cases of non-adherence to the nomenclature the applications shall be treated as incomplete and summarily rejected
