Kolkata: North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday faced an uncalled for violent situation, when some paramedical students working in the college laboratory took offense to having been asked to vacate the lab, for the visiting MCI Officials. The students in an angry response to the order of some staff members got into an altercation with them, ransacked parts of the college building and also staged a demonstration in front of the Principal's office, refusing to let him move out of his office for a couple of hours. Students alleged that the reason behind their conduct was the insulting behavior by some sections of staff.

The police summoned by the authorities to control the deteriorating situation were also attacked by the students, despite its effort to pacify the mob. The students went ahead to damage college furniture and despite senior officers efforts to placate them, continued on their rampage spree. The police finally resorted to a lathi charge to control the situation. The student's gherao of the principal was also lifted after the police intervened.

The students said that were insulted by a section of college staff members who misbehaved with them. The medical college authorities called the police, who in turn tried to pacify the agitating students, on reaching the campus. The situation became complicated when the students attacked the police. Senior police officers tried to calm the mob; however, failed to do so, as the students continued the violent acts. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to control the situation. The gherao was also lifted only after intervention of senior police officers.

The student on rampage also created tension among the patients and their relatives. Matters did settle down after a couple of hours, though only with the help of the police, reports millenium post.
