Coimbatore: The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical college has been found inadequate to run classes by the MCI.The medical college was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February.

The primary inadequacy pointed out by the visiting MCI inspection team to the college management , 10 days ago, was the lack of adequate teaching staff to run classes. According to the inspecting team, the college was 12 % short of the required teaching strength and 22% short of administrative help.

Justifying their position, the ESIC stated that the present strength was good enough to run classes for the 1st batch of the college.

During the MCI inspection, the other drawbacks that were brought to light included: a functional canteen and mess facilities, reports TOI.

The Coimbatore Medical College team that had been appointed to oversee work in the ESIC medical college, explained that ESIC currently had adequate staff to teach a batch of first-year students; "as first year mostly constitutes theory, ESIC is equipped," said a CMCH official.

The authorities in an effort to convince the MCI officials about staff adequacy, flew down to Delhi for a meeting with them. They informed the MCI officials that the management had roped in teachers from other colleges, who would be the addition to the existing staff , when the college opens to its 1st batch.

"Some of the staff would be transferred from other government colleges to fill in the vacancies. They were waiting for the state assembly election to get over to commence the process,'' ESIC officials told MCI.

"We don't see any hindrance to admit students this year,'' said an ESCI official. Elaborating on the shortage of canteen staff and mess facilities the members reiterated saying, once the college became operational mess and canteen would automatically fall in place.

According to sources, the MCI nod to start admitting students is likely to come through in the first week of June.

The ESIC college officials also cited elections being one of the factors for teaching postings getting delayed. They clarified that with the elections over things would fall in place.
