Bengaluru: MCI on state requests has extended the deadline for undergraduate course counselling. This is being done as the supreme court has made the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test mandatory.

According to MCI sources, “Since the NEET results will be out only in mid August, the states and other authorities will hardly get a month’s time to complete the process. It was therefore decided to extend the date.” There are chances that the deadline will be extended by 15 more days, they add.

The Supreme court says, counselling for under-graduate medical and dental courses must be complete by September 30, everywhere.

The delay benefits the State of Karnataka, as negotiations for private medical college seats is still on. The government is in the process of getting 40 % seats from private institutions. The private medical institution’s announcement of withdrawal of seats may see a reversal.

Medical Education Minister, Sharan Prakash Patil, says MCI’s deadline extension will give the government negotiation time. The government is convening meetings with private colleges to get 40 per cent seats, as reported to The New Indian Express.

Medical seat aspirants need not worry either. The delay in the announcement of the seats and counselling stands to their benefit .
