MCI calls for One time seat increase in Super-specialty seats in Medical Colleges

The Medical Council of India(MCI), in circular dated 19th May,2017 has in an effort to provide an increase in super specialty seats offer in the country , has directed eligible governments colleges to send in their applications for a one time increase in Super-specialty seats at their respective institutions . The notice is major effort in the direction of handling shortage of specialist doctors and trained faculty in the country. The medical regulator has set the deadline for applications as 23rd May, 2017 clearly stating that requests received after 23rd May,2017, 5 PM , or incomplete in any way will not be entertained on account of time schedule limitations,


The one time increase comes in the light of the revised teacher student ratio in the medical colleges of the country. The directive issued by the MCI secretary stated




"I am directed to convey to you that central govt. has decided to grant one-time increases in seats in Super specialty courses under revised teacher student ratio in medical college (already running super specialty courses) for the academic year 2017-18. If you are interested in applying for the same, you are requested to supply the required information in the Proforma prescribed latest by May 23rd 2017 at 5 PM in person at the MCI office,"



The recent revision of the faculty student ratio has been an important step to overcome shortage of specialist doctors by the government. The notification issued on January 31, made this ratio to be : 1:3 for professors and 1:2 for associate professors.


This revised teacher student ratio is meant to apply in all clinical subjects in government-run medical colleges. This increase in teacher student ratio is meant to generate an additional 5000 post graduation seats in colleges of the country.


Meanwhile, for an increase in super specialty courses, detailed information on the number of faculty members, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors and senior residents, working in various super specialty departments, clinical material and infrastructure available in the department has to be provided by institutions concerned to the MCI.
