MCI approves 150 MBBS seats at Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences

Bengaluru: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recently given its approval to 150 MBBS seats at the Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The Medical dialogues team had earlier reported that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had denied permission to run the 4th batch of MBBS course for the academic year 2018-19 based on the recommendation of Medical Council of India.

The institute protested against the union government and had moved a petition in the Karnataka High Court.

The Karnataka High Court had upheld the previous decision of denial given by the ministry to admit 150 MBBS students on account of prevailing deficiencies in the medical college.

Objecting to the decision of the High Court, a special leave petition was filed by the institute with the Supreme Court.

The apex court gave its decision in favour of the institute allowing admissions to 150 students for Ist year MBBS, during the academic year 2018-19.

For the upcoming academic year 2019-20, the MCI had inspected the institute and found the medical college eligible to facilitate the strength of 150 MBBS students.

Out of 22 facilities suggested by the MCI, 21 of them were created.

Overwhelmed with the recognition of the MCI, the in-charge director of KIMS, Dr Dattatreya Bunt told the Deccan Herald that the approval of admission comes after efforts by the state government and the administrative board of the college to get approval.

The institute was facing a threat of shutdown if the seats were not given the approval. The students from the region will hold 85% reservation.

The institute is a government medical college established in 2015 with affiliation to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
