MBBS seat hikes, inclusion of 2 new medical college, may give additional medical strengths to Gujarat

Ahmedabad: With the state witnessing an increase of 370 MBBS seats and a new medical college in Palanpur, this year, Gujarat may end up giving 4000 students admission to undergraduate medical courses.


According to sources, Banas Dairy and another party have applied to medical colleges in Palanpur and Dahod respectively, under the union government’s greenfield policy. The centre is likely to give a consent to the 150 seat Palanpur medical college, unlike Dahod which has been rejected, added Sources to the TOI.

Apart from seat approval granted to Palanpur Medical College, the council has also approved another 70 seats at Vadodara Medical College.


This will lead to Vadodara medical college having a capacity to admit 250 students, which was earlier a mere 180.

A compliance report from Jamnagar and Surat medical colleges has also been sought by the Council. Both the colleges have demanded permission to admit 250 students. Currently, the two possess 200 and 250 seats, respectively.

According to officials, the two colleges have been sent deficiency reports by the MCI. Once compliance is submitted by these colleges the council will re conduct inspections.The officials said a 50 seat addition was expected at Jamnagar college and a 100 more in Surat Medical College from this academic year.


This total increase will account for the 370 seat additions for this academic year; 150 seats in Palanpur college; 70 seats in Vadodara; 100 in Surat; and 50 in Jamnagar is the seat break up for the total 370 additions being made.


Besides this increase, the apex medical education regulator and the central government have decided to decrease 50 seats in Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad; making the total fall from 150 seats to 100 seats in its MBBS course for 2017-18.


According to the order dated August 18, 2017, the central government withdrew the permission granted to Pramukhswami Medical College for admission to the second batch of 150 for the MBBS course of the academic session 2017-18.


The college can now take admissions in 100 seats alone.


With a total of 3,680 medical seats in 24 medical colleges. and an increase of 320 seats, the number of medical seats available for admission in Gujarat will now touch 4000 reports TOI.
