HIKE: MBBS Interns at Central Government Hospitals to now get Rs 23,500 stipend
New Delhi: Bringing a new year present for medical interns associated with various central government medical colleges in the country, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently come out with the notice announcing that MBBS interns at these institutes with now be given a stipend of Rs 23,500 per month.
Earlier medical interns at these institutes were receiving a stipend of Rs 17,000 per month
The centre run medical institutions where the new stipend will be paid include
- All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)- All Branches
- Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)-Puducherry
- RML Hospital-Delhi
- Lady Harding Medical College (LHMC)-Delhi
- VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital- Delhi
- North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS)
For the same, a fresh notification was issued recently by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare which announced the enhancement of the rate of stipend being paid to interns in Central Government Institutes/Hospitals w.e.f 01.01.2018.
The notice states,
"In continuation of this Ministry's letter number No. S.11014/4/98- ME-l dated 28.03.2016, the undersigned is directed to convey the approval of the competent authority to revise the rate of stipend to interns borne on the authorized strength of the Central Government institutions under the control of this Ministry viz. LHMC, New Delhi, JIPMER, Pondicherry, DT.RML Hospital, New Delhi, VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences etc to Rs.23,500/- (Rupees Twenty Three Thousand Five hundred only) per month w.e.f.01.01.2018 and until further orders.
The notice went on to add that "The expenditure involved shall be met from within the sanctioned budget grant of the concerned institute/Hospital."

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr Sumedh, President of Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) stated, " Stipend hike has been a long-standing demand of MBBS interns. We had been asking the government to increase the salaries at least up to Rs 25,000. However, we are happy that the government has finally taken concern of our demands. We hope that other states will also follow in the footsteps."
