MBBS Fee yet to be fixed in Karnataka, Students Stuck

Bangalore: With the time schedule for admissions for undergraduate medical seats limited, the state government has still to work out fixation of fee in the medical colleges of the state. The NEET results were declared three weeks ago, but with the fee not fixed, students are in a crucial spot.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that medical Education Minister DK Shivakumar in May announced the possibility of a 10%

dental fee hike for the 2018-19 academic year.

However, the same proposal was not acceptable to the private medical college managements who were aiming 30 percent hike.

However, in the month of June the FRC accounced that 6.8 lakh was the maximum annual fee that had been fixed for Ist year Indian students of a private medical college doing an undergraduate MBBS course in Karnataka. With this a maximum of an 8 % fee increase over that of the previous year had been allowed to the Fee Regulatory Committee. An FRC notice, asking colleges not to raise their fee beyond 8% was also sent to private medical colleges- individually.

The decision was not acceptable to the private medical college managements, which announced that they are now going to approach the court. M R Jayaram, Chairman, Karnataka Professional Colleges Foundation, reacting to the minister’s decision said that no more state government meetings would be attended by them on fee structure and seat sharing.

Medical Education Minister, DK Shivakumar added, “We are in the process of regulating all these things and we will complete it very soon.”

When questioned on fee fixation DKS said, “We are still working on it and will complete the work soon.”

The Medical Education Minister conducted several rounds of talks with the Secretary of the department. Officials of the Medical Education Department informed that in the Wednesday meeting nothing conclusive regarding fee had emerged.
