Foundation Course for MBBS: MCI Releases documents containing details

New Delhi: To facilitate their smooth transition for the young MBBS freshers from high school to medical college, from this year onwards, medical colleges will be offering a foundation course as per the MCI mandate. The one-month foundation course is a part of the new MBBS curriculum that will be taught across the country from this year onwards and is designed to orient and sensitize the students to the various identified areas and to prepare a learner to study Medicine effectively.

While the course while not having any contribution to the internal marks for students, is a mandatory one calling for 75% attendance. The course will see faculties introducing the MBBS entrants to the world of medicine including medical profession and the physician's role in society, the MBBS programme, Alternate health systems in the country, Medical ethics, attitudes and professionalism, Universal precautions and vaccinations and much more. Besides the students will also be given basic training in life support and First-aid. For students facing language barriers, there will be a local language programme as well as the english language programme. There will be also classes on computer skills

Recently MCI released a document on their website to highlight the reasoning behind this special course as well as its components and modality

The purpose of the Foundation course as defined by the MCI is threefold

a) Orienting the students to all aspects of the medical college environment.

b) Equipping them with certain basic, but important, skills required for patient care and enhancing their communication, language, computer and learning skills.

c) Providing opportunity for peer and faculty interactions and an overall sensitisation to the various learning methodologie

The objectives as highlighted by MCI include

(i) Orient the learner to:

a. The medical profession and the physician's role in society
b. The MBBS programme
c. Alternate health systems in the country and history of medicine
d. Medical ethics, attitudes and professionalism
e. Health care system and its delivery
f. National health priorities and policies
g. Universal precautions and vaccinations
h. Patient safety and biohazard safety
i. Principles of primary care (general and community-based care)
j. The academic ambience

(ii) Enable the learner to acquire enhanced skills in:

a. Language
b. Interpersonal relationships
c. Communication
d. Learning including self-directed learning
e. Time management
f. Stress management
g. Use of information technology

(iii) Train the learner to provide:

a. First-aid
b. Basic life support

In addition to the above, learners may be enrolled in one of the following programmes which will be run concurrently:

(i) Local language programme
(ii) English language programme
(iii) Computer skills
