MBBS aspirant Given BDS course During Counselling gets HC Relief

New Delhi: A medical student whose MBBS admission was canceled, had the Delhi High Court come to her rescue stating that the admissions of the 'meritorious' needed to be looked into a more 'sensible and responsible' way by the authorities.

The case was that of an aspirant Nancy Rustagi who at the time of 1st round of Counselling had given her resignation hoping to appear in the second round of MBBS counseling and getting an up-gradation. In the second round of counseling, however, she was given a BDS seat allotment at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences by the Medical Counselling Committee(MCC) in the name of up gradation.

The petitioner Ms. Rustagi moved Delhi HC asking for quashing of the order by which her MBBS seat in a medical college was cancelled.

Approaching the HC, she filed a plea stating that she by agreeing to go in for the 2^nd round of counseling had wished for up gradation of institute alone, and not for degradation of the course reported the Indian Express.

Justice Siddharth Mridul responding to petitioner Nancy Rustagi's petition gave the centre a directive to give the student admission in Lady Harding Medical College for the academic year 2018-19. The directions were given noting the fact that there were seats available in the institution and went the bench went onto add that "freedom of choice cannot be curtailed".

"When it comes to admission of students, the officials of the respondents (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Directorate General of Health Services and Lady Hardinge Medical College) required to be more sensible and responsible," the court said, adding that they should especially be so for "meritorious" ones.
