Malappuram: The Board of Governors in the supersession of Medical Council of India (MCI BoG) has recommended its nod to the Government Medical College, Manjeri for imparting MBBS course; which will be valid for the next five years.

According to a recent media report, the MCI Board of Governors has forwarded a recommendation to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to issue a notification in this regard.

Medical Dialogues team reported last year that the Government Medical College Manjeri had been declined permission of admissions for their MBBS seats for the academic year 2018-19 on account of several deficiencies including faculty shortage found by the Medical Council of India. This was for the 2nd time that the MCI declined admission permission to the medical college to deficiencies prevailing. The first was in the year 2017-18.

In March 2018, the MCI inspection team found a lack of facilities in causality section, shortage of nursing staff, shortage of hostel facilities for students and inadequate facilities in surgery wing of the hospital, etc.

Two months later, with 100 MBBS seats in the medical institute, the health department sources had stated that permission could be granted if a written undertaking was given promising compliance of observed deficiencies. The medical college was given one month time for solving deficiencies and the assurance was given to the MCI that it will be done within the stipulated time by the health department.

Later in November, the medical college had approached the MCI after it reversed its decision to grant approval in September after college authorities failed to take up major initiatives to arrange infrastructure facilities for its students and staff, reports the TOI.

However, the medical college authorities took corrective measures to get approval for the MBBS Course. The institute freshly applied for MCI recognition after starting construction works of various buildings, including hostels, last November.

The Principal of the Medical College, Dr M P Shashi was overwhelmed with the decision given by the MCI after the inspection on 13th March this year.

He told the TOI, "We are happy that the council decided to grant approval and it is a huge sigh of relief to students and college authorities."
