Mangalore: Yenepoya University to offer new course in Clinical Ethics

Karnataka: Yenepoya University, Deralakatte in Mangalore has announced collaboration with Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany to offer a new course in clinical ethics now.

This announcement coincides with the celebration of the relationship between the two universities for the past five years. This new course will also be supported by a visibility programme at the academic block of Yenepoya Medical College on March 18.

In 2011, the two universities had reached collaboration when Yenepoya University created a dedicated Centre for Ethics. It now runs two PG diploma courses - biomedical ethics and clinical ethics.

72 trained professionals have benefitted from these courses till date. The further capability building in clinical ethics is likely to benefit more students, under the expertise of Dr Norbert Paul, director, department of history, philosophy and ethics in medicine from Johannes Gutenberg University for the joint academic project.

It has also created a pool of 20 clinical ethicists and benefits participants in student exchange, faculty exchange, research collaboration and starting of academic courses. It is only Yenepoya University in India which offers the PG diploma in clinical ethics.

As reported by TOI, in order to enhance the activities of the collaboration, the two universities are renewing the memorandum of understanding for a further period of five years and the visibility programme on Friday has been arranged to mark the event. Dr Norbert W Paul will be the chief guest. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, chancellor, Yenepoya University will preside over the function, Dr Vina Vaswani, director centre for ethics stated.
