Mumbai: Maharashtra is in readiness with five more medical colleges having been given Medical Council approval of the seven lying in wait for it.

The Directorate of Medical Education and Research(DMER ) latest brochure released carries the name of the five new approved colleges, and the details of the upcoming admission season, much to the delight of parents and students alike.

“ On the first day, the brochure said all colleges in the state were open for admission this year but seven colleges had an asterix besides their names as they were yet to get the final nod. Five of them have now been cleared, which is a huge relief for all of us.” said an aspirant’s parent. All the seven in question are headed by private managements.

The two institutes still awaiting clearance are situated in Dhule and Mayani in Satara.

The DMER this year has also announced a seat increase in Government run and deemed institutes. With 5 more approvals, the seat strength in the state is going to go up in private institutes.

Presently, there are 6300 seats available in government private and deemed medical and dental institutes of the state. The final figure with the inclusion of the new five colleges will be released by the DMER by the weekend before registrations for medical admission begin.

Parents are hopeful for the pending two colleges getting clearance as well in order to avoid last minute chaos in admissions.

“ Lat year only two colleges were waiting for clearance till August September, which led to chaos during the admission season. Even students who were already admitted withdrew their admissions and ran to the two new ones. We hope the government avoids such last minute changes this time,” said another parent to HT.
