Nagpur: Two post graduate seats in the subject of Radio Therapy at Government Medical College which had been derecognized in 2014 have been granted recognition all over again. The earlier de recognition had happened due to deficiencies of staff and equipment in the radio therapy department.

The seats have been recognized from a back date, in 2014. Though the college is yet to get a letter from the MCI in this regard, the MCI website is displaying its recognition. However, these seats have come temporarily with a rider that the college fulfills all the deficiencies of staff and equipment pointed out by the Council, which includes a "linear accelerator' as one of the most important equipment. The college presently only has a cobalt unit for radiation therapy, for the cancer patients. However, the college now has the required teaching staff as its biggest strength for retaining the course.

GMC, Nagpur is the only government college in the state with a PG degree course in radiotherapy. The course sanction came its way in 2011, after a persistent effort of 20- years. It was the fruit of labour put in by Former Head of Department, Dr Krishna Kamble.

It is assumed that state indifference has never allowed GMCH to get its due importance and status by the government. An outcome of the overall neglect faced by Vidharbha. The Rs 120 crore cancer project, which is supposed to put in place major equipment like linear accelerator, also stands in the sphere of uncertainty, reports TOI.
