Maharashtra: With a clear objective to boost medical and education research in Maharashtra, the state government has now arrived at a decision to launch new PG medical courses.

The initial reports on the matter suggest that these PG medical courses will be launched at MUHS Nashik i.e. Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in Nashik.

This is expected to increase the capacity of student intake for PG courses in the government medical education sector.

"We have the MUHS but it is not into teaching and handles administrative work. On lines of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, we are planning post-graduate courses on the MUHS Nashik campus with the Nashik civil hospital being attached to it," said medical education minister Vinod Tawade while speaking to dna.

Tawade in addition to his comment implied that for the said purpose they are looking at securing 70% funding from the central government and the balance being provided by the state government. The proposed facility and number of issues such as the number of departments in the institute are also being considered actively.

The proposal is currently being reviewed, with an objective to enable the university to offer PG courses directly and therefore, aid the development of inter-pathy research, added MUHS vice-chancellor Dr Deelip Mhaisekar. Also, it will give an impetus to the number of PG seats in government run medical college in the state.

At present, Maharashtra has a total intake of 6,145 MBBS seats in the 48 allopathic medical colleges, which includes 2,150 seats in the 15 government colleges, 610 in civic-run medical colleges, including four in Mumbai, and a 1,620 and 1,525 intake in private medical colleges and deemed universities, respectively. The AFMC in Pune has 140 seats and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Wardha has 100 seats.

For post-graduate studies, the intake is at 2,874 seats, including 1,364 in government medical colleges.
