Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government has decided to give admissions to non-NEET qualifiers in the BSc Nursing Program this year looking at the poor admission response. A government resolution ( GR) announced the same, on Monday.

Hindustan Times reports that the GR categorically states that this year’s admission in nursing programs will be based on a student's class 12 mark sheet in the science stream. The Common Entrance Test Cell is to conduct a Centralized Admission Process (CAP) for student applicants for these seats. The remaining vacancies after CAP are to be filled at the college level.

Nursing college enrollments have touched a low ebb in the past years. In order to boost admission to nursing colleges, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) had suggested that the state government forego the need for an entrance test for admission to BSc Nursing. This decision was taken when a 1000 seats remained vacant after the admission process.

Students opt for the Nursing diploma course instead of the B.Sc nursing program after class 12. Nursing is not a very popular program due to poor remuneration and work tensions.

Admission to private dental and medical colleges in the state took place on the basis of NEET scores, until the year 2016 following a Supreme Court order. Though allied health science course admissions to state-run medical and dental colleges and all private and government institutes were done on the basis of CET scores.

This year, NEET was made the basis for all health science courses for private as well as government colleges reports HT.
