Maharashtra Medical College: Second year female MBBS student attempts suicide

Unable to cope with depression, the second year MBBS student decided to end her life.


Nagpur: The instances of MBBS students suffering from depression are growing day by day. In a recently reported incident, a second-year female MBBS student studying at Government Medical College and Hospital tried to end her life by consuming 20-25 pills.


She was reportedly struggling with depression. Unable to cope up, she decided to take this extreme step. The student was discovered unconscious in her room by her friend at the same hostel.


The MBBS student was saved by timely medical intervention.

According to a local Maharashtra daily, Nagpur Today, the Akola-based second-year MBBS student was in depression for the past six-seven months.


Last week, on January 30, she was alone in her hostel room when she consumed 20-25 pills with the intention to end her life. Later, her friend entered the room and found her in lying in an unconscious state. She alerted the hostel staff and other students immediately. The unconscious student was subsequently rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital where she underwent treatment.


The MBBS student's condition is currently stable.

This is fifth such incident at the Government Medical College in the span of three years. The medical institute has already witnessed two suicides and three attempts to suicide. A few months back, a lady doctor had tried to slit her neck due to depression, adds the Nagpur Today.


Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about a case where a final year MBBS student at the Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak (PGIMS Rohtak), had allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room on the institute campus by consuming a poisonous substance.


The student was depressed after his mother's death last year and had been lagging behind his studies.
