Maharashtra Medical College: Assistant Professor suffering from Bipolar Disorder allegedly commits suicide

Mumbai: In an unfortunate incident, an assistant professor at Government Medical College, Aurangabad, who had been suffering from bipolar disorder; has allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself with three kinds of sedative medications at his residence recently. A suicide note has been recovered from the spot wherein the doctor had reportedly stated that he had been going through “psychiatric illness”. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as a Karnataka based 28-year-old gold medallist in medicine from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) and was working as a lecturer attached to the medicine department at the medical college. The investigating officers informed PTI, "We have recovered a suicide note which informs that the deceased was suffering from bipolar disorder and was facing social anxiety for the past 15 days. Prima facie, it seems he consumed some medicines."

According to recent media accounts, the tragic incident came to light on January 6th when the doctor did not come out of his flat. TOI reports that the doctor was sharing the flat with his roommate who is also a doctor at the medical college. He was on emergency duty when he called the professor in the afternoon that day. The roommate approached the Beghumpura police after Gowda neither answered his phone calls nor opened the door. Speaking to TOI, Police inspector Sanap stated, “A duplicate key had to be made to open the door since the doctor did not respond to constant knocking of the door. He was found lying on the bed with self-administered IV fluid and several injections next to him.” The doctor was taken to the medical college immediately where he was declared brought dead. The inspector informed that the suicide note found at the deceased doctor's residence mentioned that he suspects that he is suffering from a psychiatric illness and for the last 15 days, he was having episodes of depression and was unable to make decisions, which led him to take the extreme step of ending his life.
