Maharashtra: IGGMC faced a surprise compliance visit
Nagpur: A compliance inspection carried out by the Medical Council of India(MCI), at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC), on Monday, found faculty and infra structural deficiencies, as well as, shortage of equipment in the library . The inspection was undertaken in order to see whether the college met the stipulated norms for its 150 seats.
The 2016 MCI inspection had pointed out deficiencies of faculty appointments and bed strength. The college was to fulfill these shortcomings at the earliest.
However, the college authorities were caught by surprise at the Monday inspection. The three-member MCI-appointed inspectors team found a 10.26% deficiency in faculty appointments. A deficiency above 10% is not allowed.
The faculty shortcomings persist as the state government has not created post of three associate professors and six lecturers. Therefore, the college hasn't filled these posts. Besides this, three professors from the college are on deputation duty elsewhere, but the MCI inspectors refused to take this explanation into consideration; their stance was, that it was not in their hands to overlook this deficiency.
The college will be required to send a letter to the MCI officials, in this regard. At present, the college faculty strength stands at 162 teachers.
MCI inspectors also pointed at the number of air conditioners- being less. They also found not enough computers with Internet availability in the library. The library is ideally meant to have about 40 seats, as against the present 17 or 18, manned with computers.
The demolition issue of class IV quarters and construction of new ones was also raised, however, the college revealed that the existing could only be demolished after the state government released funds for the task and the construction of the new.
The inspectors also raised the issue of a common gymkhana for both staff and students, which the college did not have, the TOI reported.
The inspectors also demanded a common gymkhana as per MCI norms, for staff and students, which the college didn't have.
