Mumbai: 400 applications of candidates who had applied for medical and dental admissions under the state quota in government-run and private colleges, have been rejected by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER). The rejection comes in the face of lack of domicile verification necessary for state quota in private and government run institutions.

Officials said the student forms were rejected because they had no state domicile proof for quota admissions.

“Close to 50,400 students filled choice forms for admissions that DMER will conduct. Of these, we called 15,000 students to verify documents and 400 of them could not provide the appropriate documents. We had to reject their applications,” Dr Pravin Shingare, Director, DMER told HT.

35,000 other applications will be verified by colleges at the time of admission according to Shingare.

The DMER original admission schedule released stated document verification of registered students would be done between July 14 and July 24. After this, students were to fill online choice forms. However changes followed. An updated schedule was released 10 days ago, when the Medical Council of India (MCI) requested for uniformity in medical and dental admissionsall over. DMER also introduced variations, and has decided to release the first seat allotment list on July 25 instead.

While feeling relieved about a final verification happening, before confirming admissions, there was concern about it changing the admission cycle.

“ DMER will conduct three rounds of admissions, and if institutes cancel admissions owing to lack of documents once the process begins, the vacant seats will have to be allotted in the next round,” a parent commented.
