Maharashtra: Deemed medical and dental colleges exempt of Domicile reservation

Mumbai: Deemed Medical and Dental Institutes of Maharashtra will be exempt of domicile reservation for undergraduate admissions, is the decision, that has been taken by the state government. However, the state-owned and private institutes will have to include domicile reservation for the state’s students. A government resolution declaring this decision will be released in a few days.


“There’s no domicile reservation for seats under the all India quota (AIQ) and NRI quota. We have decided to drop deemed institutes from following the policy because the Supreme Court has already passed an order to exempt deemed institutes from following the domicile reservation,” a senior Official,DME informed HT. This decision comes after review of former SC orders on this topic by law experts he added.


Maharashtra with its second highest number of medical and dental institutes after Karnataka has brought cheer to lakhs of domicile aspirants . “Our children deserve to get first preference, especially since Karnataka government already follows a domicile rule. We just hope this move doesn’t rile up private institutes and lead to a long fights in courts,” said a parent.


A government resolution (GR) released by the medical education department on April 27, announced the state’s decision to give 67% seat reservation to private and deemed institutes for domicile candidates.25% of the seats, stated the resolution, were for the first time to be reserved in deemed medical and dental universities, for candidates from the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Vimukta Jati, Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) and Other Backward Classes (OBC).


However, three days later only, the Bombay High Court put a stay on this GR and a week later, the apex court upheld the HC decision reports HT.
