Aurangabad: 168 lecturer positions have been regularized in sixteen government medical and dental colleges of the state. This has been finally been done in the light of the fact that fifty percent vacancies of professors and lecturers in medical colleges have affected both management and patient care in government hospitals.

So many vacancies have also impacted the no of medical seats in colleges; faculty shortage is also a reason for colleges not being granted recognition by the Medical Council of India, for non fulfillment of stipulations.

According to the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers' Association, (MSMTA), Secretary, Dr. Girish Thakur , who is also HOD, Latur Government Medical College, the government has finally acted upon the employees long pending demand to be regularized. The MSMTA, he said had been pursuing the demand for eight years with both the government and the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).

The process of identification of the right candidates for regularization began in January. "Lecturers will not only benefit financially, but the roadblocks in their career growth has also been cleared," Thakur told TOI.

In 2014 on the advice of the Medical Council of India, the Health Ministry withdrew 500 medical seats from eight government colleges in Maharashtra. Mr. Thakur further revealed, that these colleges were later allowed to keep these seats on the promise that they would fulfill all the deficiencies related to infra structure and staff.
