Maharahtra: 19 MBBS students have been expelled from state and civic-run medical colleges in Mumbai and Kolhapur for having allegedly submitted fake certificates to seek admission under the schedule caste and tribe category. The expulsion came on a tip off to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).

The DMER which supervises all admissions to the state and civic run hospitals, in the face of the scandal, has called for verification of all students who have sought admissions under this category. Police complaints against erring students have also been lodged.

There is also information that admissions sought in prior years ( 2013-14 & 2014-15) also carry similar fake credentials under the SC/ST category. The information once again- a result of a tip of to the DMER.

According to JJ Hospital Dean, Dr T. P. Lahane "Nine Grant Medical College students found guilty of malpractice had claimed that they belonged to a tribal village near Nandurbar in northwest Maharashtra and authorities there sent a report on Tuesday, identifying nine fake certificates."
