Madurai Medical College bags MCI nod for 100 more MBBS seats
Madurai: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recently given its approval to the Madurai Medical College (MMC) to add 100 more MBBS seats to the existing 150 seats for the academic year 2019-20.
The Madurai Medical College is attached to the Government Rajaji Hospital which provides tertiary care to over twenty million people in the southern part of the state. It has its affiliations from Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
The MCI had carried out inspection several inspections in the last few years. The demand for seeking more seats started in 2014.
Now, satisfied with the infrastructure and other facilities in the medical college, the MCI gave its approval for the same but the approval came with several undertakings.
The letter of permission issued by from the Board of Governors of the MCI mentioned that 'approval would be renewed for the next academic year with the enhancement of infrastructure and expansion of hospital facilities', reports the Hindu.
The enhancement of the infrastructural facilities was in process. The process of constructing classrooms, libraries, laboratories and more lecture halls are underway.
A senior doctor told the Hindu, "Several classrooms and at least one additional lecture hall must be built to accommodate all students by 2020."
Apart from the sanctioning of 100 seats, officials from MMC also expressed hope that a handful of new super-speciality courses would be introduced from the upcoming academic year after MCI conducted inspection regarding this as well, reports . TOI
The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Union Health Ministry has granted its permission for setting up a new government medical college and hospital at Karur and commence MBBS course for 150 seats at the Institute for the academic year 2019-20.

Other colleges in the state were collectively given 350 more MBBS seats that included the enhancement of 100 seats more each in Madurai Medical College Hospital and Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. With this, the number of MBBS seats in both medical colleges increased from 150 to 250".
