Bhopal: With 7 new government medical colleges coming up in the state, with 100 seats each and 827 advertised posts and another 6 presently functioning ones with 355 faculty posts vacant, one wonders about the future success of the upcoming institutions.

The six ongoing colleges in Rewa, Gwalior, Sagar, Indore and Bhopal have 1,384 sanctioned posts, with officials figures pointing at 91 professor posts, 145 assistant professor posts and 119 associate professor posts- as vacant. These posts are in the Departments of cardiothoracic surgery anaesthesia. gynaecology anatomy, dental, biochemistry, dermatology, PSM, paediatrics, pharmacology, orthopaedics, medicine, TB chest, radiotherapy, and forensic medicine reports Free Press Journal.

The 291 vacancies in super speciality exist for posts of professor, associate professor and assistant professor. There are no super specialists in Government colleges.

9 posts lie vacant in the Cancer Hospital’s at Jabalpur, Bhopal and Gwalior; while the Mansik Arogyashala (mental hospital) in Gwalior has three associate and assistant professors posts lying vacant.

The upcoming seven medical colleges of the state near completion are unlikely to get the education regulator’s commencement nod, in the absence of teaching faculty, say sources.

These 100 seater colleges will be coming up in Vidisha, Datia, Shahdol, Ratlam, Shivpuri, Chhindwara and Khandwa.

The faculty requirement in these institutions is of 180 professors, 250- associate professors and 397- assistant professors.

Total sanctioned posts: 2512

Total vacant posts: 1485

Teaching staff required in present six medical colleges: 384

Total vacant posts in six medical colleges: 355.

What is the reason behind the shortage of faculty in the state? Some attribute it to the working environment in Government being unfriendly, and the Department of Medical Education has no recruitment policy to follow.

When the DME advertised for post of assistant professor, not many came forward to join, preferring to stay with private institutions due to better working conditions reports Free Press Journal.

A recent recruitment process carried out for MBBS doctors by the Health and Family Welfare Department saw 350 were filled, out of 1900 advertised for posts.
