Raipur: A 19-year-old MBBS first year student of Dimrapal Medical College Girls' Hostel in Jagdalpur in Bastar district, attempted suicide by gulping down 22 pills of Cetirizine medicine on Friday night. In her statement to the police the Ist year student of 2016 MBBS batch said that the stress of studies and an average score had led her to the extreme step.

However, authorities at the medical college refuse to believe her version as they allege that the student had been ragged and harassed by senior girls in hostel. Reiterating the same Jagdalpur SP, Arif Sheikh confessed to the TOI of having received a call from the Ministry of Human Resource Development's anti-ragging call centre that the survivor had attempted to take her life because of excessive ragging. "The girl however, denied the case of ragging in her statement, further investigation and interrogation would reveal the truth," SP Sheikh told the TOI.

Sources revealed of ragging having become a regular phenomena in the past two days and one of the students had even complained to the HRD's anti-ragging call centre. The College's anti-ragging committee however, had no information.

According to information, the Dimrapal student had been seen to be disturbed after a party she attended on the fateful night. It was on her return to her room around 12 am, after a short nap that she woke up to swallow 22 tablets of Cetirizine, after which she started vomiting.

Her roommate on seeing her condition, swiftly informed the hostel management and the girl was rushed to the ICU ward of the Medical College.

At 11 am, the Parpa woman police came to record her statement . It was then that she confessed that she was depressed, because of a poor score in her first semester. Sources said that the police wasn't allowed to record girl's statement or have a word with her personally. The college Dean, Superintendent along with others were present, while the girl made a public statement. She is said to be stable at present.
