Bhopal: The Director Medical Education(DME), has taken a significant step forward after complaints of irregularities in NRI admissions in private medical colleges surfaced, by seizing all documents related to NRI Quota admissions from private medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh for the year 2017. The action by the DME was reported to the Jabalpur High Court as well.

The private medical colleges though tried to cause incessant delays in the handing over of NRI quota and other admission related documents after the mop up round of counselling, the close court scrutiny had the DME take on the role of a watchdog too and pressurize colleges to hand over all documentation.

The double bench of Justice R S Jha and Justice Nandita Dube, hearing a hoard of petitions from affected students and activists alleging large-scale irregularities were informed by the government, that the relevant admission documents were being examined. The court gave the authorities a week’s interval for submission of their report to the judicial body.

Social activist Vinay Parihar, whose petition is also under consideration informed the court that of the 138 admissions given under NRI quota, only one is genuine. “The rest have been sold to the highest bidder,” he alleged.

104 admissions under NRI quota have already been cancelled by the DME leaving only 63 under court scrutiny.

A suffering student, Priyangshu Agrawal, in his petition alleged that the said irregularities had taken place during the mop-up-round. He claimed that instead of giving the remaining seats to deserving students, the private sold them to NRI’s and other undeserving students, to accrue profits. According to him, 250 seats were sold in the following manner.

It was further alleged that irregularities were committed despite directives, otherwise, from both the Supreme Court and the High Court, that students of Madhya Pradesh were to be given first preference in getting admission to MBBS courses, and if any seats were remaining they were to be given away to students from other parts of the country, reports HT.

The respondents, in this case, are the Principal Secretary, Health, The Director Medical Education, Chirayu Medical College, R D Gargi Medical College, Aurobindo Medical College, LN Medical College, Amaltas Medical College, People’s Medical College and RKDF Medical College.

In an earlier story done by Medical Dialogues, it was reported that a major admission scam was unfolding with the Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University finding irregularities in the admission of 179 MBBS students under NRI quota in private medical colleges of the state for the year 2016-17. The admission of 25 students had already been cancelled.

The Directorate of Medical Education had been asked by the university to cancel the admission of the remaining 154 students and also refrain from publishing their results.
