Indore:A case has been reported from the Index Medical College, a senior was allegedly beaten up by three junior doctors. Authorities have informed that this case falls under the ambit of ragging and action shall be taken on the same lines

The recent incident at the college involved three juniors beating up their senior, who threatened to file a complaint against them to their head of department. The police has received complaints from both sides on the issue.

Juniors at the surgical department-Anil Yadav, Kaushlendra and KP Singh had referred a patient to the orthopedic department. Noor Arshad the doctor on duty and their senior objected to their action alleging that the patient had been sent to him without preliminary investigation at their end. It is believed that while conveying this over the phone to his juniors Arshad threatened to file a complaint against the three to their department head and asked to be put on to the head immediately.

Irked by their senior's threatening posture, the threesome went to Arshad and had a crossfire of words, which it is alleged soon turned unpleasant.

“They bashed him up saying how dare he think of lodging a complaint against them to their senior,” reported eye witnesses.

The victim was injured during the crossfire incident and taken to the MY hospital, from where he was discharged, after preliminary examination and treatment.

The complaints from both ends with the police followed. “While Arshad claimed that he was thrashed by the trio juniors, the latter stated that they were the ones who were beaten up by the former,” said ASI Bharat Singh Chauhan, Khudel Police Station. The police are investigating after having received complaints from both sides.

The college authorities at their end have handed over the case to the disciplinary committee to look into.“ Whoever will be found at fault will be punished,” the authorities added.

Interestingly, this case happens to fall within the new norms stipulated by the UGC for ragging, which outlines that irrespective of senior , junior, if any student is bothered by another, the case will be considered as a case of ragging. Prior to this, cases where a senior was found troubling a junior, were to be registered as incidents of ragging.

Confirming the new UGC norms, Laxmikant Tripathi, Dean, Student Welfare, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya told Freepressjournal, “The new norms state that irrespective of senior, junior, if any student was bothered by another, the case will be considered as a case of ragging.”

Twenty days ago in another incident of ragging, a complaint had been filed with the Anti Ragging Committee of the University Grants Commission. The college after conducting a probe had denied it to have been an incident of ragging. However, three students were suspended by the college authorities for bothering their juniors. They however, were pardoned later.
