Uttar Pradesh: A recent proposal by the governing body of the SGPGIMS (Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences) has left the faculty members in a state of worry. The matter at hand is regarding the appointment of “select faculty member as professor of eminence."

As implied by few sources, according to the proposal, there is a new norm at the institute under which a faculty member (or members) who have served as director will automatically become professor of eminence. This designation will entitle the person to perks like accommodation, conveyance allowance, and telephone allowance till the age of 70 years.

However, the faculty members are not in support at this juncture as they feel they were not consulted before arriving at this important decision. It is against the rulebook and the tradition of SGPGIMS, they alleged.

A Professor is implied to have said that appointment of 'professor of eminence' demand excellence in academics which has not been paid heed to.

As reported by TOI, in an email circulated to its members, faculty forum representatives have written, "There is a burning issue of professor of eminence that needs clarification amongst ourselves as it has never been discussed with the faculty before. A general body meeting has been fixed on March 17. All are requested to attend."

Officials in the medical education department confirmed that such a proposal has come. "But the faculty doesn't need to worry as it (the proposal) would be examined in detail before clearance," said a senior officer.
