Lack of infrastructure, faculty: MCI reduces 22 MBBS seats at SN Medical College
Agra: The MBBS seats at Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SN Medical College) have been reduced to 128 seats for the academic year 2019-20 after the Medical Council of India (MCI) found the infrastructure deficiency during its inspection.
SN Medical College is a premier institution in the state. It is affiliated to Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University (erstwhile Agra University). The medical college offered MBBS course with a total intake of 150 seats which has now been reduced by 22 seats after the recent MCI inspection.
Last year, the MCI during its inspection had noticed flaws in infrastructure and faculty for which it had recommended improvement.

A three-member team of the MCI had visited the institution on 28th May and took note of facilities provided at the operation theatres, pathology lab, library, general and emergency wards. A detailed assessment of faculty, para-medical staff and technicians was done by the team, reports the TOI.
The medical council noted that the medical college only has 132 medical teachers on duty whereas 162 are required as per MCI norms. The library does not have the required capacity for seating of 600 students, besides, only 170 nurses were on duty as compared to the required number of 372.
The committee compared the report and found the medical college short of 18% of teachers and 40% nursing staff. Library and laboratories were also found to be in poor condition.
The MCI found that SN medical college could not fulfil the standard norms to continue the course. Dissatisfied with the infrastructure and faculty present at the institution, the MCI reduced 22 MBBS seats from the existing 150 seats.
The Director General, Medical Education of Uttar Pradesh told the TOI, "The MCI has reduced 22 seats at SNMC following lack of teachers and other shortcomings. The matter to fulfill the MCI norms will be brought to the notice of the state government."
