Kolkata: 8 arrested for fake MBBS admission racket
Koltakata The Survey Park police have arrested 8 members of an inter-country gang which cheated medical aspirants of their lakhs by offering fraudulent admissions for Karnataka and Bengal medical institutions. This came days after the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), results were announced.
This came after two employees of a fake consultancy firm at Kalikapur spilt the beans on the cheats.
"The case has been recorded based on a report submitted by sub-inspector T N Tewary in connection with an inquiry letter, which later became the letter of complaint, filed by Apala Dutta and Amit Kumar Rana, employees of Indian Lead.com at Kalikapur. They complained against the directors, Ajitesh Mondal and Ashwani Modi, and managers Aniruddha Das Gupta and Kshitish Sahoo and their associates. The two, who lodged the complaint on June 11, said they were forced into the fake admission racket," said (SSD) Santosh Nimbalkar told TOI
The cheaters, Das Gupta and Sahoo initially pretended to be innocent, however, they finally accepted the crime.
Mondal and Modi aimed at aspirants lower on the rank list and charged them capitation fee for getting them the promised admission. The capitation charges ranged between Rs 35 lakh and Rs 75 lakh. They allured the victims' by offering management quota seats in MBBS courses.
"The gang members said the office had trade license from the KMC as they had claimed to run a computer training center," an officer told TOI. "They have a branch office in Bengaluru, where Modi was the in-charge. Mondal was in charge of the Kolkata unit. Mondal was earlier arrested in an admission racket by the Bangalore Police in 2016."
