Kiran Bedi inaugurates JIPMER medical campus in Karaikal

Karaikal: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi inaugurated the Karaikal campus of Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Inaugurating the medical college in a makeshift location, Bedi said 49 students had been selected for the first year of MBBS course in the institution.


She said the medical college will be developed with state-of-the-art facilities and would improve the healthcare scenario of Karaikal district.


Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Narayanasamy said that the Union Health Ministry had accorded approval for constructing permanent campus in 78 acres of land for the institution at a cost of Rs 850 crore in two phases.


In the first phase, campus construction with all amenities would be taken up at a cost of Rs 497 crore. In phase two, a super speciality hospital would be constructed at a cost of Rs 353 crore, he said.


Narayanasamy further said that until the new institution gets its permanent campus, students studying in this college will make use of the 506-bedded Karaikal General Hospital.
