Lucknow: In a surprising revelation the King George Medical University (KGMU), has been found employing cooks as helpers in the operation theatres ICUs, cath labs, and critical care wards.

The allegations have surfaced after 10 cooks were discovered posted in various departments of KGMU from Trauma 2, in last three months, on the Registrar’s directive.

TOI reports that the posted cooks were found disinfecting equipment changing patient dressings, and taking care of patients in the ICU’s without having received any formal training for it.

This approach taken by the college authorities was objected to by the Employees Union of KGMU. The KGMU Union, President, submitted an objection letter to the registrar of the college, stating that 10 cooks were posted as helpers in various departments of the college. The written communication states that employees working in MCIs, OTs, ICUs, and wards need to be well qualified and trained.

The Registrar in response to the written communication said that these cooks had been appointed as fourth-class employees.

"The employee union has complained that these cooks are being used as helpers and we'll talk to the concerned officials of the institution in this matter," the Registrar told the TOI.
