Kerala:Upgrade of GMC Ernakulam and setting up of cancer centre gains thrust

Kochi: The Government Medical College, Ernakulam, is being upgraded as a centre of excellence along with a cancer centre being built at Kochi. The issue has gained thrusts as many political and public sector organisations are joining hands in this endeavour.


While the CPM will be convening a meeting on Wednesday to discuss issues related to the development of the college, political and social activists will get together on Thursday to work out strategy for the same.

The Wednesday meeting of the CPM at Kalamassery, will have health experts and planning board member Dr B Ekbal in attendance.

According to Mr. P. Rajeeve, Secretary CPM District as the medical college is falling behind in maintaining quality healthcare facilities the Wednesday meeting will work out an action plan for up gradation of the healthcare college hospital.

"Officials with the departments such as PWD and different public sector undertakings will also attend the meeting. PSUs will be able to contribute a sum from their corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to provide facilities at the medical college," Rajeeve said.

A public sector unit has already announced its decision to fund a cath lab for the hospital, which would incur an expense of Rs. 3 crores. The state government’s assist calls for appointment of cardiologists at the college hospital.The meeting with regards to this will also witness presence of members from the Justice Krishna Iyer movement[ many MLA’s including those from other districts would be participating.

MP K V Thomas and MLAs Hibi Eden, Anwar Sadath, VK Ebrahim Kunju and Eldhose Kunnappilly have agreed to attend the meeting.The presence of political activists is bound to help in securing financial required for the project.
