KOZHIKODE: The Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode is close to becoming a Center for excellence while swiftly shifting into an e-hospital mode, where all patient documentation is available online. Only minor additions are needed for it to become an excellence centre informed Hospital, Superintendent, M.P. Sreejayan.

Speaking about the future picture of the hospital, the superintendent said that they visualized every patient to have identification numbers, which would help them access their reports online. The staff in turn will also be able to access patient reports concerning them- online. The aim behind online accessibility is to make the hospital paperless and data available on fingertips.

The e-hospital mode may later be extended to connecting all primary health centers, taluk and district hospitals.

An initiative is also being taken to introduce an “ Online OP” to help in crowd management. Under this a patient is supposed to have a prior appointment to meet a doctor, except in the cases of emergency.

To further manage crowds, there are plans to equip the district General Hospital in Kozhikode Beach to handle more cases. “More than 30 per cent of the cases received at the Medical College on a daily bases are ones that can be easily handled at the Beach Hospital as well,” said the Superintendent.

A trauma care center and a super surgical block is to be started at the hospital soon as well.

According to the M.P. Sreejayan, manpower shortage especially of para medical staff is what has kept the hospital from becoming a center for excellence, since doctor shortage is less than 20%.

NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers) accreditation is a major step in terming a hospital a “Center for Excellence.”

“If the criteria for NABH accreditation are followed to the core, the hospital will be a Center for Excellence in around two years,” said Dr.Sreejayan.
