Thiruvananthapuram:The Justice James headed Admission Supervisory Committee(ASC), has cancelled all the 150 student admissions to Kannur Medical College, on the basis that it has neither observed the committee guidelines on MBBS admissions nor the court orders, regarding the same. It has also decided to regulate the annual tuition fee of Karuna Medical College.

The primary reasons given by the ASC for having overlooked the 150 admissions to Kannur Medical College are:

  • Overlooking of the triple test laid down by the Supreme Court by Kannur Medical College (amounting to violation of ASC and court orders)

  • The student application forms not being actual application forms as they do not carry the name of the medical college, applicant’s photograph and signature or date.

  • No transparency and merit having been compromised ( in violation of all norms, directions and orders)

Keeping the above stated reasons in mind, the ASC in its order has asked the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Registrar to abstain from registering the 150 student names forwarded to the university, by Kannur Medical College, for the academic year 2016-17, reports the Indian Express.

‘’Thus, all the admissions are in violation of the laid down norms, directions and orders. Therefore, the MBBS 2016-17 admissions of Kannur Medical College cannot be approved,’’ the order stated. The ASC has carried out the documentation scrutiny as per the directions of the court.

The scrutiny carried out by the ASC with regards to the 15 NRI seats also revealed that no supportive documents were produced and the category of the students could only be marked from the application alone; which according to the ASC and as stated in the order, was not legally sufficient.

Speaking about the SEBC category rejections, the ASC said that in the absence of non creamy layer certificates, no appropriate admission relaxation could be offered. Further still the Admission Advisory Committee rounded up the rejection of the students by saying that the audited balance sheet and such other records, that were to have been submitted by Kannur Medical college were also missing.

Karuna Medical College has a sanctioned intake of 100 seats. As per the prospectus, there are 17 seats on General Merit, 33 seats for SEBC/SC/ST/Muslim and 35 seats under Management quota.
