Bravo: Kilpauk Medical College alumni adopt Tiruvallur village under Seva project

Alumni of the Government Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) from the first batch of the 1960s to the one that passed out this year — have come together for a project, 'Seva'. The project involves looking after hygiene and sanitation of the village, the college has adopted in Tiruvallur district.


Prasad Manne, Secretary, KMC Alumni Association, speaking about the project said, "We wanted to build trust in the community and give something back,"


The adopted village, Namasivayapuram in Kadambattur block, with 91 houses will be looked after for communicable diseases, identification of non-communicable diseases and bringing about improvement in maternal and child health.


Having completed a household survey, the alumni have already held three medical camps and referred patients to the local primary health centre and other government hospitals.


12 toilets have been built by the team of alumnis' of the college with another 31 being planned, says Dr. Manne . Other initiatives that the team plans to undertake are : awareness talks about preventing breeding of mosquitoes and health education, Dr Manne told the Hindu.


Deputy Director, Health Services, Tiruvallur, J. Prabakaran, said outpatient services had been rendered by the group in the village. An official of the college said the alumni has been involved with helping students too.


Last year,a book bank was started by the team for those who could not afford medical texts. Books worth nearly Rs 3 lakh have been donated,Dr. Manne told the Hindu . The association, which has around 5,000 members, has a nexus of communication through the Facebook and Whats App application.
