Kerala: Suspension of 18 TMC students revoked

Thiruvananthapuram: 18 students of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College who were earlier suspended for gross in disciplinary behavior at the Euphoria Arts fest of the college, by the college inquiry committee have now been reinstated. This has been done keeping the forthcoming final year MBBS exam in mind.

The decision to revoke the suspension was taken by the college Principal, Dr. Thomas Mathew, who had a meeting with the suspended group of students, who gave him an assurance that no repeat of this would happen again; and the differences between them were resolved. The students had been suspended for an indefinite period, on Tuesday, following clashes over the results of the Arts Festival.

The students were allowed to attend class on Thursday, after the suspension was revoked.

A case has been registered against one of the students who was involved in the clash by the Medical College Police. The suspended students belonged to the 2012, 2013 and 2014 batches,respectively.

Trouble erupted when fake complaints were filed by some students of the 2014 batch, which ended with the police coming in and suspension following. According to the senior batch, the juniors had filed a fake complaint of ragging and a girl being abused. It was the presence of police on campus and the two FIRs registered, that led to the flare up. The rift deepened with the Arts Festival issues. The Euphoria Arts Fest held at the Medical College last month had seen the 2013 batch emerging victorious; resulting in a rivalry between them and the 2014 batch.

Objections against suspension were also raised by the girl students, who felt raising voices at each other in the hostel did not call for suspension of students.

The inquiry committee justifying its stand to the college management stated that the suspension was called for in order to maintain a peaceful academic environment on campus
