Kannur: The Pariyaram Medical College(PMC), action committee for government takeover has forewarned to renew its protest to demand a government take over of the institution.

D. Surendranath, Committee General Convener at a press meet on Saturday clarified that granting of autonomous status to the college would be strongly opposed.

Kannur Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala would inaugurate the agitation proclamation convention at the Yogasala Hall here on January 7. Activist C.R. Neelakandan would deliver the keynote address, he added.

The Committee General Convener revealed that the agitation had been set aside earlier, when during the tenure of the UDF government, 100 crore were kept aside in the budget for the government takeover.

Asserting that government takeover was the only solution, Mr. Surendranath reminded that the land of the medical college was still government owned, as the High Court had cancelled its handing over to the cooperative society running the college.

Speaking about the society’s current stand of wanting to make PMC an autonomous body, the General Convener reminded those present that earlier, during the UDF rule, the Governing Body of the college had supported the government take over proposal for the college. It had further clarified that the government takeover would be acceptable, only if the institution was converted into a Government Medical College, like the one in Kozhikode.

Action committee representatives Vinod Payyada, Rajan Korambeth, Sunny Ambat, and P. Balan were present at the press meet, as reported by The Hindu.
