Palakkad: The Medical Council of India(MCI), is unlikely to give approval for admissions to Palakkad, Government Medical College for the next academic year in the face of faculty shortage. The institution established using Rs. 800 crore from the special component plan fund for SC/ST welfare is in all probability going to suffer a setback.

The MCI has identified a deficiency of 29% at the faculty level and 35% at the resident level.

The stipulated MCI guideline does not Allow for a deficiency beyond 10 %. Last year's inspection identified faculty shortage at 25% and residency shortage at 31%.

The MCI, however, expressed satisfaction over the infrastructural facilities available.

Though the State Cabinet approved an SC/ST Department proposal to fill 281 vacancies at the medical college, the process has yet to reach completion.

Thirty eight staff need to be appointed immediately. The continuous resignations by teachers for better career options is a major cause of hindrance in the way of the college. Meanwhile, Directorate of medical education has started steps to fill the vacancies using the existing PSC rank list reports Hindu.
