Kerala: Kozhikode GMCs 60th anniversary celebrated with 60 project introductions

Kozhikode: 60 proposals to mark the 60th anniversary is indeed a unique way to celebrate ones six decades of existence . The Kozhikode Government Medical College(GMC), authorities have decided to make the institution's sixtieth year significant by deciding to broom away its waste menace, ban entry of plastic bottles on campus , introduce innovative methods to dispose of sanitary napkins and plant fruit bearing trees.


Health Minister K K Shailaja will officially cut the ribbon at an inaugural of the the year-long programs . The sixty projects are to be implemented with the support of public, political representatives, college staff and students.


With the college incineration unit, that disposed of 150 kg of waste on a daily basis having become dysfunctional, the college authorities have decided to find a permanent solution to the problem of wastes generated on the campus.


Presently, piled up plastic and other non degradable waste items sit pretty on the college campus. In order to get rid of these visible sites, the authorities have decided to put up dustbins at various points of the sprawling 222 acres of campus stretch. Non degradable wastes are to be removed as well. The college has already hired an agency for the purpose of removal of non degradable waste.


45 water purifiers and 10 vending machines have also been installed by the college through sponsorship, on all floors of the college, to create drinking water convenience for both staff and students.


A ban has been placed on bringing plastic bottles into the campus, to reduce generation of plastic wastes. The other compelling step being taken by the college is disposal of sanitary napkins.


A significant introduction by the college during the year will inclue replacement of electricity with solar power. The college also envisages a project to set up suitable rain water harvesting facility to overcome water scarcity in the summer, reports the TOI.


The fancier initiatives the college plans to trigger in its 60th year are planting of fruit bearing trees on the premises and installation of music systems for all the hospital wards, which will play Malyalam and Hindi music.


The college also plans to make infrastructural introductions to meet basic departmental needs.


Dr V P Sasidharan, Principal of the medical college, said a mass committee comprising people from all walks of life has already been constituted for project implementation.


''MLA also expressed his vision and a detailed project report will be presented at the time of the official inauguration of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the college,'' he said.
