Kerala: Kottayam Medical College gets renovated nephrology ward

Kottayam: Health Minister, K K Shylaja, inaugurated and inspected the renovated nephrology ward and the Medical Critical Care Unit at the Kottayam Medical College, on Sunday.


The Minister took a round of the 60 bedded Ayyappa ward arranged specially for the Sabarimala pilgrimage season and also checked the facilities available for cardiac surgery in the cardio thoracic department of the college.


The Minister addressing the press later, highlighted the government plans to make all government medical college hospitals into centers of medical excellence. As a step in this direction the minister said, shortage of staff and lack of modern facilities would also be looked into. The Minister also spoke of a review being done of the present staff pattern which was still based on the 1961 data. She further revealed that the state government has sought central government support in improving the infrastructure facilities at the five medical college hospitals.


She also spoke of future efforts to be made by the government to upgrade primary health centers in order to decrease the footfall in medical college hospitals.


The ‘Ardram Project’, the minister said was aiming at making government hospitals patient friendly.She also spoke of planned efforts to improve the over all standard and cleanliness of general wards.


K. Suresh Kurup, MLA, CPI(M) district secretary V. N. Vasavan, Kottayam Medical College principal Jose Joseph, DME Ramla Beevi, hospital superintendent T. K. Jayakumar and others were also present on the occasion .
