Kerala : Health Ministry orders recognition of Malabar Medical College

Kochi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an order asking the Kerala University of Health Sciences to grant recognition to Malabar Medical College and Research Centre, Calicut. The order comes with the direction of the Supreme Court mandated Oversight Committee.


It is reported that the Lodha Panel granted Malabar Medical College permission to admit 150 MBBS students in 2016.The recognition granted to undergraduate MBBS courses is subjected to directives and stipulations made by the Oversight Committee for a maximum period of five years. After this period the conditions are to be renewed.

An affidavit is also to be submitted from the Dean/Principal and Chairman of the Trust/University/Society/Company etc concerned confirming fulfillment of all deficiencies and statements made in the compliance report, submitted to the Health Ministry by 22nd June 2016 within 15 days of this notification.


A bank guarantee worth rupees 2 crore in favour of the MCI also needs to be submitted by the college. The guarantee is supposed to be valid for a one year period or till the first renewal. The bank guarantee is supposed to be an an add on to the prescribed fee submitted along with the application.


The Oversight Committee is authorised to conduct direct inspection of the medical college to check on compliance submitted by the college and considered by the OC, anytime after 30 September, 2016. If the college fails to comply to bring about promised changes it will be debarred from fresh intake of students for two years for the years 2017-18.
